Solutions that put people first.

Safe System & Vision Zero

Safety is our priority, not an afterthought. Our nationally recognized leaders use a data-driven, equitable, and cross-disciplinary approach to put safety at the heart of every project. Together with our clients, we build stronger, safer communities, prioritizing the protection of our most vulnerable roadway users.

Our Expertise

As leaders in systemic safety analysis and visualization, clients rely on us to:

  • Implement Safety Plans: Transform ideas into action, addressing design, funding, and practical applications.
  • Integrate the Safe System Approach: Incorporate the FHWA/USDOT Safe System Approach into General Plans.
  • Develop and Implement Vision Zero Action Plans: Create strategies to eliminate traffic fatalities and address high-injury networks.
  • Streamline Project Reviews: Obtain state and federal environmental (CEQA, SEPA, NEPA, etc.) exemptions for environmentally friendly, multimodal projects.
  • Design Cost-Effective Solutions: Enhance new and existing roadways, streetscapes, and land use projects.
  • Conduct Safety Impact Analyses: Leverage big data to monitor and improve safety.
  • Create Comprehensive and Local Safety Plans: Develop tailored plans (e.g., LRSPs, CSAPs, SSARs) to meet community needs.
  • Advise on Funding Strategies: Secure competitive grant funding for safety-focused projects.
  • Engage Communities: Conduct inclusive, data-driven safety studies.
  • Assess Vehicle Electrification and Autonomous Vehicle Impacts: Prepare for emerging trends in transportation and infrastructure.

Why We’re Trusted

Our team leads the way in evolving safety technology, policies, and design practices. Here are some ways we make a difference:

  • National Research Leadership: We have partnered with FHWA, NCHRP, and AASHTO, contributing to key resources like the Highway Safety Manual.
  • Vision Zero Faculty: We collaborated with the Swedish Transport Agency and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health as faculty for the first US Vision Zero Academy in 2024.
  • National Training Programs: We actively develop and instruct Safe System courses at the national level, including the ITE Safe System Certificate Course and the US Vision Zero Academy on behalf of FHWA, Caltrans, and UC Berkeley SafeTREC.
  • Regional Vision Zero Plans: Our development of the Vision Zero Action Plan for Central Florida informed plans for three counties and 20 cities.
  • High-Injury Corridor Studies: We performed safety studies for the Hagerstown/Eastern Panhandle MPO, using on-site safety evaluations to assess existing conditions and the FHWA Safe System Project Alignment tool to proactively identify risk factors.
  • Needs Assessments for MPOs: We are leading assessments with 15 MPOs across multiple states to identify challenges and opportunities for integrating the Safe System Approach into transportation planning. These workshops help MPOs evaluate their programs against SSA principles, and FHWA will use our findings to support future initiatives.
