Solutions that put people first.
Our Services
Safe Routes to School
Everyone deserves to travel safely through their community. Our Safe Routes to School (SRTS) practice helps students, parents, and school staff get to and from school smoothly, whether walking, biking, bussing, or driving. Using our comprehensive multimodal expertise, we design and help implement engineering and programmatic solutions—ranging from low-cost/near-term to long-term capital improvements—that make travel safer, easier, and more accessible for everyone.
Our Expertise
Cities, counties, school districts, and private schools trust us to:
- Improve Safety: Design and implement site-specific safety improvements tailored for each unique community, whether in rural, suburban, or urban settings.
- Solve Traffic Challenges: Resolve pick-up/drop-off and multimodal traffic challenges through a range of data-driven engineering solutions and low-cost/high-reward programmatic solutions.
- Secure Funding: Navigate funding opportunities by preparing grant applications and advising on funding strategies.
- Engage and Educate: Connect with communities, school districts, and caregivers to deliver solutions that are aligned with local needs and develop educational resources to promote SRTS.
- Retrofit Roadways: Leverage our design and operations expertise to retrofit roadways for multimodal safety improvements.
Why We’re Trusted
We are safety leaders and multimodal transportation experts and have worked on SRTS projects across the country. Here are a few examples of how we’re making a difference:
- Master Planning: In collaboration with city staff, school community members, and the broader public, we developed a SRTS Master Plan supporting 20+ K-12 schools in Puyallup, Washington; following plan adoption, we developed walking maps around all elementary schools within the district to encourage students and families to walk to school rather than drive.
- Street-Level Perspective: We conducted walk audits in Sonoma County, California, engaging local school districts, local agency staff, and the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition to improve safety and access to/from schools across the county.
- Implementing Wins through Ongoing Projects: Since 2019, we’ve created SRTS plans for Denver schools, implementing improvements through city projects and quick-build solutions.
- Funding Alignment: We evaluated the quality of infrastructure for six schools in Multnomah County, Oregon, identifying improvements eligible for SRTS grant funding and recommending phased upgrades.
