Integrating Safety at Every Level to Transform Policies, Practices, and Programs

Monday, August 11 – 11:00 AM ET

What would it take to make safety a built-in feature of every transportation decision? This session explores how safety can be embedded into every level of planning, design, and operations. Using the “Ws of Safety” framework and Safe System principles, attendees will learn strategies to redesign agency practices and reach the goal of zero roadway deaths.

This session examines MetroPlan Orlando’s $3.79 million initiative to eliminate roadway deaths by 2050, a key example of regional collaboration, customized action plans, and integrating safety into daily operations amid limited resources. Osceola and Orange County reps will share how they used data-driven safety analyses, development code updates, road retrofits, and design standard adjustments. The session will provide engineers and planners with insights into data-driven safety analyses, regional cooperation, and policy adaptations for safer roadways.
