Get a First Look at the Generative AI Policy Starter Kit

October 7, 2026 • 1 minute read
Earlier this year, we shared that we were working with other members of the Institute of Transportation Engineers’ (ITE) AI in Transportation Great Idea Group (AI GIG) to develop practical guidance for organizations using generative AI.

The Generative AI Policy Starter Kit will give agencies, firms, and other organizations a place to start when developing or refining their own AI guidance, along with takeaways individuals can apply in their everyday use of AI. Informed by input from transportation professionals, it will include considerations, case studies, sample policy language, and helpful checklists across three areas:

  • Organizational Governance: Who can use what, who makes decisions, and who signs off.
  • Secure Use: How to evaluate tools, handle data safely, and protect sensitive information.
  • Practical Use: Professional responsibility, staff development, copyright and intellectual property, and QA/QC for AI-assisted work.
Diagram of the Generative AI Policy Starter Kit, organized around three areas: organizational governance, secure use, and practical use. It addresses questions about accountability, AI inputs, system security, and the ownership and reliability of AI outputs.
The goal is not simply to put a policy on paper. It is to help organizations create guidance people can understand and use in practice, while keeping professional accountability where it belongs.

We led this volunteer effort and contributed a governance case study from our own firm, sharing how we’re approaching AI governance through clear ownership, input from across the company, and leadership checkpoints as our practices continue to evolve.

The full kit launches in November, alongside a launch webinar. Until then, two resources are ready to be explored now. The ITE Quick Bite overviews the kit’s contents, and the latest ITE Journal article, available to ITE members, explores two areas that continue to raise practical questions for transportation professionals: copyright and intellectual property, and QA/QC for AI-assisted work.

Intern Perspectives: A Summer in Transportation

Intern Perspectives: A Summer in Transportation

What does a transportation internship actually look like? This summer, 25 interns across 14 of our offices gained hands-on experience with fieldwork, street design, GIS, data analysis, visual communication, client work, and community engagement. See what they learned, what surprised them, and how the experience shaped the way they think about careers in transportation.

Understanding AI’s Role in Transportation Safety

AI is giving transportation safety practitioners new ways to analyze data, detect near misses, and respond to risk before crashes happen. Real-world examples from Bellevue, WA and San Bernardino, CA show where AI-supported technology is delivering value—and where human judgment remains essential for turning data into responsible safety decisions.
