Build a Foundation

Safety is a shared responsibility. By working with you and your key agency and stakeholder partners, elected officials, and advocates, we can create a culture around achieving safety goals and a shared commitment to putting safety best practices into action.

Key Considerations:

Safety Committee

By adopting the Safe System approach as the foundation of your safety plan, establish a safety team that aligns with the elements of the Safe System. It’s important to include agency, stakeholder, and community partners who can provide insights on the current conditions and advance changes in areas such as road design, speeds, road users, vehicles, and post-crash care.

Continued Stewardship

Many stakeholder groups are established to support the development of a safety plan. Don’t let this committee disband once the initial planning work is complete. Your safety committee is critical to supporting ongoing implementation of safety projects and programs and providing accountability for meeting your community’s safety goals.

With every safety planning effort, we work with clients to engage a multidisciplinary group of stakeholders to establish a committee that will help champion implementation. The City of Berkeley created and maintained such a committee to enable ongoing implementation and annual progress reporting for their Vision Zero Action Plan.
