Complete Streets Engineering Project Manager

Our Oakland office is seeking a Complete Streets Engineering Project Manager to join a team committed to solving complex transportation problems within our local inner East Bay cities. As a group of passionate planners and engineers, our team strives to increase opportunity in our neighboring communities by expanding accessibility and improving mobility. In Oakland, we foster a friendly, flexible, “small company” office environment, primarily serving the inner East Bay communities with the support of our established, industry-leading Fehr & Peers firm. We partner with public and private sector clients, such as the Oakland Department of Transportation (OakDOT) and the Alameda County Transportation Commission (CTC), and strive to be their most trusted partner by delivering cutting-edge technical expertise. For public sector clients, we lead PS&E efforts, corridor studies, master plans, conceptual designs, environmental documents, and everything in between. Our private sector clients include civil engineers, urban designers, developers, and technology firms.

More About the Role

Designers at Fehr & Peers implement new solutions and witness designs becoming realities. Through extensive field work, close coordination with other members of the complete streets and engineering planning and design teams, on-the-job training, and conversations with clients and communities, this position provides the opportunity to prepare conceptual designs and PS&E work with support from our senior staff. The ideal candidate will provide creative, thoughtful, feasible design solutions that improve communities and are consistent with the latest best practices developed by NACTO and similar organizations. 

Full-Time (40 hours/week)

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Managing tasks for engineering and planning studies
  • Performing field work, such as site review prior to design and support during construction
  • Preparing accurate, feasible, and visually appealing conceptual designs
  • Preparing plans, specifications, and estimates for everything from crosswalk safety upgrades, to separated bike lanes, to possible traffic signal designs
  • Managing direct client interaction and direct communication with members of the public through public engagement
  • Marketing and bringing in new projects through nurturing client relationships and preparing proposals and interviews
  • Mentoring and training colleagues while receiving mentorship from senior staff

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • Five years of experience in transportation engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Ability to thrive in an environment encouraging initiative, vision, autonomy, and creativity
  • Experience building leadership and growth through teamwork, collaboration, and inclusivity
  • Ability to apply Caltrans DIB 89-01, FHWA Separated Bike Lane Planning and Design Guide, and MassDOT Separated Bike Lane Planning and Design Guide guidelines to engineering concepts
  • Experience in designing and reviewing signing and striping plans
  • Knowledge of safety countermeasure selection and design
  • Familiarity with mobility issues in the East Bay and how they affect transportation engineering
  • Experience with leading proposals and nurturing client relationships
  • Experience in mentoring and training staff

Desirable Experience & Qualifications:

  • California PE license
  • RSP certification
  • Experience with listening to and engaging with diverse communities
  • Understanding of mobility needs in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties
  • Quick-build project design and implementation experience
  • Traffic signal design experience and ability
  • Multimodal traffic engineering experience and ability
  • Active transportation planning experience and ability
  • Road safety plans experience and ability
  • Fluency in a language (other than English) commonly spoken in Alameda County
