Distill complex concepts into intuitive visuals

Fehr & Peers is a transportation planning and engineering firm that develops effective and innovative solutions to planning and design problems associated with all modes of transportation. Visual Communications is the vehicle that conveys those solutions, and we’re always accepting designer/planner applications for each of our locations — just let us know your location preference when you apply. See below to explore offices with immediate needs.

Our Entry-Level Visual Communications Designer/Planners come from a variety of backgrounds and educations: graphic design, UI/UX design, GIS design, planning, landscape architecture, etc. We don’t have an archetype for this role, but we are a diverse group of individuals with one thing in common, a passion for transportation. We’re always looking to connect with visual designers interested in joining our team to help raise the bar on our project deliverables.

Transportation analysis is often technically complex, which means the ability to clearly understand the pros and cons of different scenarios varies greatly by audience. Our visual designers help bridge that gap by simplifying complex concepts into intuitive visuals for all to understand. Whether creating materials to communicate with and engage the public, helping clients make informed decisions, or somewhere in between, our designers collaborate and partner with project managers to determine the best ways to deliver information. As an in-house visual communications expert, we expect everything you touch to become more sophisticated than the draft you were given. If you enjoy collaborating and asking questions, keeping project managers informed, and providing options that you feel will improve a deliverable, then this might be your best career move yet.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide engaging design and document layout for competitive proposals, reports, presentations, and other deliverables
  • Take complex transportation analysis concepts and turn them into intuitive visuals
  • Continually share ideas and examples with colleagues
  • Collaborate with project managers to determine the best way to deliver information

Qualifications:

  • Intermediate proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
  • Strong visual and written communication skills
  • A portfolio showing visual design projects
  • Interpersonal skills, desire to collaborate, and a creative approach to problem-solving
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask
  • An interest in transportation or urban planning, and a desire to learn cutting-edge software programs

Preferred skills include:

  • Internship in urban planning, urban design, or transportation planning
  • Basic understanding of ESRI ArcGIS
  • Basic knowledge of SketchUp or other 3D visualization software
  • Basic web design skills in WordPress or similar software
