Equity in Transportation

Transportation equity is a critical thread running through our work at Fehr & Peers. We understand that a variety of demographic, social, and economic factors result in people having different experiences while using the same mode of transportation or mobility service. As a result, equity is not an afterthought or standalone task, but a key consideration at each stage of a project; in visioning, community outreach, technical analysis, and presentation of results.

Many communities today are grappling with the environmental and social consequences of past choices, recognizing the need to understand and acknowledge our collective history as we seek to repair broken systems and to envision new solutions. Accordingly, we partner closely with our public, institutional, and private clients to help them better understand and serve diverse communities.

Leveraging New Technology & Mobility Services

Leveraging New Technology & Mobility Services

Mobility gaps, or barriers in a users ability to complete their trip, are quite common. The good news is that there are many ways to fill them and connect people with the services they need. Here we talk about the benefits of a three-part assessment that prioritizes equity, recently conducted in partnership with Oregon Metro, to identify areas most suitable for using new technologies to fill mobility gaps across their region.

We listen first.

Our approach to advising and planning is rooted in partnership with the clients and communities we serve: we listen first to understand needs, concerns, and desires from all perspectives. We then develop customized, context-specific strategies designed to meet the community’s needs.

We prioritize inclusion.

Solutions that are both successful and implementable are also inclusive: they engage a wide range of stakeholders and community members and consider multiple viewpoints. We collaborate with clients and community members to examine multiple perspectives and to identify the best possible solutions, and then we work with them to put those plans into action.

We value diverse approaches.

We understand that all metrics and datasets have limitations, and that what we measure – and how we measure it – matters, and work with our clients to develop analysis approaches that accurately capture the behavior and needs of their diverse communities. We leverage a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods and propose performance measures that address client goals.

Transportation equity is an evolving field. Let’s work and learn together to improve mobility, access, and safety for our communities.
