We work with some of the most advanced transportation technology companies and agencies in the U.S. Our focus on transportation offers a wide range of rich data, giving opportunity for exploration and creativity. Our database engineers have worked on projects like modeling regional travel trends with mobile device data, improving travel time, reliability, and safety by combining speed and collision data, and evaluating video and LiDar for asset management and influence on traveler behavior.

As complex datasets are becoming part of every project we do, we are constantly looking for better ways to process, analyze, and use data to tell a compelling story. We are searching for a talented database engineer who is passionate about the field of data science and the powerful role it plays in informing us in a constantly evolving landscape. The ideal candidate will have capabilities in the areas of database transfer and loading, architecture, and administration.

Each day, I interact with clients, data partners, and staff on the use of large data sets in transportation planning projects. These projects can range from analyzing individual GPS traces for use in local neighborhood traffic calming, to multi-county travel behavior studies aimed at identifying the purpose and overall travel trends throughout a region. I am looking for someone who brings a critical eye to the “sales pitch” made by teaming partners, and understands the appropriate uses of a variety of data and processing types. If you are someone who can provide advice to me and our clients in the quickly changing data landscape, then this opportunity is for you.

As IT Director, much of my job revolves around providing infrastructure and support so our staff can provide high quality analysis to our clients, reliably and efficiently. Our goal is to identify and implement the most appropriate and efficient tools for the job. Many of our analysis tools and projects are using larger datasets, so I am looking for an experienced team member to provide insight and recommendations on solutions that work now, along with a roadmap on where to go next – all while being a team player and helping to implement and adapt the solutions over time.

More About the Role

Our clients’ expectations are constantly evolving, which means our data science team plays a crucial role in the successful execution of not only our business operations, but also our consulting services. With the growth of new and bigger datasets, we are searching for a talented professional specialized in three areas: database transfer and loading, architecture, and administration. While qualifications will vary by experience, the type of skills we are looking for include:

Data Transfer & Loading

  • Ability to collect, integrate, and analyze large volumes of homogeneous/heterogeneous data to provide information to enable better decision making
  • Can assist developers in tuning queries and refactoring existing ones with optimal resource consumption
  • Fluent with Python, R, or similar scripting language preferred

Architecture

  • Strong understanding of various database platforms including Microsoft SQL, Postgres SQL, and cloud-based database solutions (AWS, Azure, etc)
  • Experience monitoring databases and apply patches, executing scripts, and creating backups to ensure access and the consistency of data.

Administration

  • Able to gather technical requirements through interviews and analysis of existing applications and databases, and distill into meaningful deliverables
  • GIS knowledge a plus: Esri ArcGIS, PostGIS, Spatialite, QGIS, etc.
  • Ability to proactively engage staff across the company to share technical approaches and data sources
  • At least 5 years of experience working with databases including performance tuning, debugging, security, and resilient design and disaster recovery
  • Experience with a geographically dispersed development team is desired
